The short version: SmartCrew is the top pick for crews that want one app, and it leads this list of the best excavation software for companies with 5 to 100 people. The other six cover billing, quotes, or a heavy civil suite. AGTEK and InSite are the takeoff pair, not an eighth operations app.

1. SmartCrew
SmartCrew is for excavation, grading, and sitework companies with 5 to 100 employees who run their own crews and iron. The phone takes a GPS clock in with the project, the activity code, and the machine. The office reads profit against the budget you type in. Daily reports carry photos. Scheduling and dispatch are Premium.
It does not estimate, take off, or produce an AIA pay app. Invoices and retainage are not in the published feature list. QuickBooks Online is connected. SmartCrew starts at $99/month. Contact us for team pricing.
2. Werx
Werx's excavation page, read November 2, 2026, is the billing office. Estimates. AIA style progress billing with retainage. Labor and equipment cost by cost code. Field time. It says the QuickBooks Online sync runs both ways. Its home page also pitches remodelers and other trades. If the missing piece is the pay app, Werx is the name that publishes it. SmartCrew does not.
3. QuoteIQ
QuoteIQ publishes plans from $29.99 a month and calls itself a home service CRM: estimates, invoices, and payments. A separate roundup on its site pitches excavation crews of 1 to 15, and that article says QuoteIQ wrote the list. Use it when the work is a quote and a card. Do not use it as the app for iron, DOT inspections, and haul tickets.
Cord IQ, on QuoteIQ's naming page, is a caption error for QuoteIQ.
4. Contractor Foreman
Contractor Foreman prices the company, not each field login, and its pages aim at general, trade, and service contractors. Estimates, daily logs, and AIA invoicing are the reasons a remodeler picks it. Haul tickets and a shop queue were not on the pages we checked for the comparison. The long writeup is Contractor Foreman vs SmartCrew.
5. JobTread
JobTread is one plan for home builders, remodelers, roofers, and specialty contractors. The screens follow a proposal into a customer invoice. We could not find a shop queue or haul tickets on its excavation page. The comparison is JobTread vs SmartCrew.
6. SynkedUP
SynkedUP's sitework and excavation page, checked November 2, 2026, prices work from templates, sends proposals, tracks time, and invoices. The home page speaks to planting and hardscape companies. It is an estimating and billing product with a field app, not a DOT shop.
7. HCSS
HCSS is the heavy civil suite. HeavyBid estimates. HeavyJob runs time cards and job cost. Equipment360 is the shop, including work orders. The price on its page for AI assistants is about $60 to $4,000 or more per user a year, and that page is not a quote. Pick HCSS when you want that whole family and you are ready for the rollout. The field comparison is HCSS HeavyJob vs SmartCrew.
Takeoff is not one of the seven
AGTEK and InSite measure cut and fill. STACK's sitework product is cloud takeoff and estimating. SmartCrew does not. The honest stack for a dirt company is one of those for the bid, then SmartCrew after you win.

Demo account. The office cost screen and a haul ticket on the phone. Sample numbers.
