JobTread vs SmartCrew (2026): Pricing, Features & Best Alternatives

JobTread is estimating, project management and job costing software for home builders, remodelers, pool builders, roofers and specialty contractors. It's sold as one plan with every feature in it. SmartCrew is built only for heavy civil and dirtwork companies with 5 to 100 employees: crew time, machines, inspections, haul tickets, daily reports and job profit. If your business runs on iron and trucks, not proposals and customer invoices, that's what SmartCrew is for.

JobTread does not offer: pick the machine at clock-in, equipment hours & locations, maintenance tracking, service requests from the field, utilization rates, shop queue, digital hauling tickets. JobTread doesn't list these either: clock in/out reminders, toolbox talks & safety meetings.

No: they do not offer it. Their own website says so, or it isn’t in the full feature list they publish (linked). Add-on: a paid add-on, a separate product or a higher plan. Limited: they have something close but narrower. Not listed (n/l on small screens): we searched their site and help pages and couldn’t find it, but they don’t publish a full list we could check.

This chart is SmartCrew’s feature list, so it doesn’t show what other products do that SmartCrew doesn’t (like estimating, payroll or hardware time clocks). Each comparison covers that in “where they’re the better pick”. SmartCrew’s Fleet Management, Sales CRM, and Scheduling & Communications are Premium categories; feature availability varies by plan.

Where each mark comes from

The short version

  • SmartCrew is built only for dirtwork and heavy civil: the clock-in, the machine, the inspection, the load and the job's profit in one app.
  • JobTread's list price is $199 a month with one internal user, plus $20 for each added user, with cheaper rates past 10 users. Anyone who tracks time counts as an internal user.
  • Worked out from those list prices, 15 people who clock in come to $454 a month and 40 people come to $679 a month, billed monthly. Annual billing takes 20% off.
  • JobTread is the better pick for estimating and proposals, customer and vendor portals, and one price with every feature included.
  • We couldn't find equipment hours, maintenance, a shop queue, DOT inspections or haul tickets on JobTread's own pages.
  • SmartCrew starts at $99/month. Contact us for team pricing.

JobTread is better for builders and remodelers. SmartCrew is built for dirtwork.

JobTread's who we serve page lists home builders, remodelers, pool builders, outdoor living, roofers, specialty contractors, commercial contractors and franchises. For those builders, JobTread is the better pick.

SmartCrew is built for one thing: heavy civil and dirtwork contractors with 5 to 100 employees. Excavation, grading, sitework, underground utilities, paving, road construction, demolition, septic, directional drilling and land clearing. That's all we do.

Where JobTread falls short on a dirtwork job:

  • Your machines aren't on its pages. We couldn't find equipment hours, maintenance or a shop queue on JobTread's site, its excavation page included.
  • Haul tickets aren't listed. Its AI reads receipts, not haul tickets.
  • Every guy who clocks in is a paid seat. Anyone who tracks time is an internal user. 15 people come to $454 a month billed monthly.
  • DOT inspections aren't listed. Custom forms can hold a checklist.

What JobTread is, and who it's for

JobTread calls itself construction estimating and project management software. Its site is built around the people it serves: home builders, remodelers, pool and outdoor living builders, roofers and specialty contractors. It also has an excavation page.

The product follows a job from the sale to the bill. Leads move through a sales pipeline. A cost catalog turns into a proposal. Then the budget, purchase orders, change orders, daily logs, time tracking and the customer invoice all sit on the same job. Customers and vendors get their own portals, and the features page is a long list.

It's built for a company that sells, builds and bills through subs and customers. Where it gets thin is the iron. Its feature list doesn't name equipment, and we couldn't find machine hours, maintenance or a shop anywhere on its pages.

How much does JobTread cost?

JobTread has one plan, and it publishes the price. Here's what its pricing page listed on October 26, 2026. We checked it in a browser that day, including the price calculator.

That sliding scale is kind to a bigger crew. The part to read twice is the free user rule. A foreman who only posts photos and notes can be free. An operator whose hours have to land on a cost code is a paid seat. So count everyone who clocks in.

JobTread also says it skips a free trial on purpose and gives every new client a Customer Success Manager instead. That's a fair trade if you want help getting set up.

SmartCrew starts at $99/month, and it's built to be well below the cost of enterprise construction software. Contact us for team pricing.

The key difference: built for builders vs built only for dirtwork

When we went looking for software for our own family business, nothing fit. We only run 20-30 guys and there was nothing specifically designed for our size of heavy civil business. JobTread is good software. It just wasn't designed around the iron. Here's where that shows up.

Built for the builder's job

JobTread's tools follow a builder's job: the proposal, purchase orders to suppliers and subs, change orders, the customer portal and the invoice. A dirtwork job runs on different things. Hours by machine. Loads by truck. An inspection before the dozer moves. SmartCrew is built around those, for heavy civil trades only: excavation, sitework, grading, utilities, septic, drilling, paving, demolition and hauling.

Machines and the shop

This is the biggest gap. We couldn't find equipment hours, maintenance, service requests, utilization or a shop queue on JobTread's site, its release notes or its excavation page. Its custom forms do cover inspections, so you could build a daily checklist. But a form isn't a machine record.

In SmartCrew every machine has a record: hours, mileage, last and next service, and its inspection log. When an operator reports a problem from the field, it shows up in the shop's service queue with how urgent it is and where the repair stands.

Trucks and loads

JobTread tracks purchase orders and deliveries from your suppliers. We didn't find haul tickets. Its AI is useful, but it reads receipts: vendor, total, tax, bill number and date. In SmartCrew the haul ticket is the record. Truck, project, import or export, material, yards and the pit it came from. Snap a photo of the paper ticket and the AI reader fills it in.

Knowing your profit every day

Here JobTread is strong, and we'll say so. Its job costing tracks costs against your budget in real time, and it handles change orders. The difference is what feeds the number. In SmartCrew the operator picks the machine at clock-in, and the job page shows budget against spent for labor, materials, equipment, other costs and change orders. On a dirt job the iron is a big piece of the cost, so it gets its own line right next to labor.

What the crew has to do

JobTread's crew clocks in with a location, and the office can require them to pick a job and a cost code. A clock-in more than a mile from the job site gets flagged. Its mobile app is a web app you add to your phone, not a download from the Apple or Google stores.

Our crews aren't tech savvy. And they don't need to be. In SmartCrew one phone app does the clock-in with job, activity code and machine, then the inspection, the haul log, the receipts and the daily report.

SmartCrew service queue: equipment problems reported from the field with who reported them, when, urgency and repair status

JobTread vs the other construction management tools

JobTread sits with Procore, HCSS HeavyJob, Raken and Contractor Foreman. These are built to run whole projects, or whole companies across a lot of trades. JobTread stands out for one public price with a lot of office tools in it. Here's how each one lines up against SmartCrew's full feature list, marked from each company's own website.

Feature chartSmartCrew vs enterprise and construction management software

Built to run big projects or every kind of contractor. Lots of power, but more setup, more screens and a bigger bill than most 5 to 100 person dirtwork companies need.

Where each mark comes from

When JobTread still makes sense

JobTread makes sense when the office side of the job is the hard part.

Pick SmartCrew if

  • You run excavators, dozers and dump trucks and want machine hours, DOT inspections and the shop queue in the same app as time.
  • You haul, and you want haul tickets entered from a photo of the paper ticket.
  • You already estimate somewhere else and want profit against that bid every day.
  • Your guys need one simple phone app for the clock-in, the inspection, the load and the daily report.
  • You have 5 to 100 employees, use QuickBooks Online, and want us to set it up and train your people.

Pick JobTread if

  • You're a home builder, remodeler, pool builder or roofer.
  • You live in estimates and proposals, with a cost catalog behind them.

The best JobTread alternatives in 2026

The right one depends on why you're leaving. If JobTread's office tools fit and the field is the mess, you need something built for the field. If you want a cheaper all-in-one, that's a different list.

  1. SmartCrew, for dirtwork and heavy civil companies with 5 to 100 employees that want crews, machines, loads and job profit in one app. That's us, so weigh this pick with that in mind.
  2. Contractor Foreman, a low-cost all-in-one for general, trade and service contractors, priced per company by user tier from $49 a month billed annually. Most of its field tools start on its Plus plan. See Contractor Foreman vs SmartCrew.
  3. Procore, for owners and bigger general contractors. Its price depends on the products you need and how much construction you do a year. See Procore vs SmartCrew.
  4. HCSS HeavyJob, for heavy civil contractors that self-perform with their own crews and equipment and want an enterprise suite, priced by quote. See HCSS HeavyJob vs SmartCrew.
  5. Raken, construction software for general, sub and specialty contractors with daily reporting and time tracking in its base plan, priced by quote. See Raken vs SmartCrew.
  6. Jobber, if your dirt jobs are mostly small residential work you quote, schedule and invoice. It's built for service businesses. See Jobber vs SmartCrew.

JobTread fits builders. Heavy civil field software is the hcss alternative, the b2w alternative, and heavy civil construction software.

Switching from JobTread

You don't have to move everything at once. You can keep JobTread for proposals and customer invoices and run the field in SmartCrew, or move over completely. Either way, we do the heavy lifting.

  1. Decide what stays

If your customers already sign proposals and pay invoices in JobTread, that can stay. Pick the field side to move first.

  2. We set up your jobs, cost codes and machines

Our team sets up your account, moves your information over and organizes your workflows around how your crews work.

  3. Your guys clock in on day one

They pick the job, the activity code and the machine. The office sees live crew locations right away.

  4. Add inspections, loads and job costing

DOT inspections, haul tickets, daily reports and job profit come next. We train your people as you go. Most companies are up and running within a few weeks.

Questions people ask

Is JobTread good for excavation companies?

JobTread has an excavation page and job costing, daily logs and time tracking with cost codes. We couldn't find equipment hours, maintenance, DOT inspections or haul tickets on its site, and most excavation companies track those every day. If they matter to you, SmartCrew is built only for dirtwork and heavy civil.

How much does JobTread cost for a 15-person crew?

On October 26, 2026, JobTread listed $199 a month with one internal user, plus $20 each for users 2 to 10 and $15 each for users 11 to 20. If all 15 people track time, that's $454 a month billed monthly, or $363 a month billed annually by its own calculator. Field users who only post photos, notes and tasks can be free.

Does JobTread charge for field workers?

It depends on what they do. JobTread's pricing page says anyone who tracks time is an internal user, which is a paid seat. Field crew who only upload photos, log daily notes, view the schedule or check off tasks can be added free.

Does JobTread track equipment or heavy machinery?

We couldn't find equipment hours, maintenance, service requests or utilization on JobTread's site, including its excavation page and release notes. Its custom forms can hold an inspection checklist. In SmartCrew every machine has a record with hours, service dates and inspections, and the operator picks it at clock-in.

Can JobTread's AI read haul tickets?

JobTread's AI scans receipts and fills in the vendor, total, tax, bill number and date. We didn't find haul or load tickets on its site. SmartCrew's AI reader fills in the data from photos of haul tickets and receipts.

Does JobTread have a free trial?

No. Its pricing page says it skips a free trial because every client gets a Customer Success Manager. Monthly plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Does SmartCrew do estimating like JobTread?

No. SmartCrew doesn't do estimating or takeoff. It tracks your bid budget against actual cost once the job is won, and it has a sales pipeline for leads and bids. If proposals are the center of your office, JobTread is built for that.

How much does SmartCrew cost?

SmartCrew starts at $99/month, and it's built to be well below the cost of enterprise construction software. Contact us for team pricing.
