Top 10 Work Order Software for Excavation Contractors (2026)

The short version: SmartCrew is the top pick for excavation crews that want one app, and work order software for excavation contractors is a muddled search. A work order on our published list is a service request in the shop queue, not a builder's job ticket. HCSS Equipment360, Knowify Advanced, and BusyBusy Operations are the names whose own pages actually say work orders.

The short version

  • SmartCrew: service requests, urgency, and a shop queue. Not labeled work orders.
  • HCSS Equipment360, Knowify Advanced, and BusyBusy Operations publish work orders.
  • QuoteIQ, Werx, JobTread, SynkedUP, and Contractor Foreman are billing or field apps. Work orders were not on the pages checked.
  • Cord IQ is not a separate product on QuoteIQ's own naming page.
  • SmartCrew starts at $99/month. Contact us for team pricing.

What a work order is on a dirt crew

On a building, a work order is often a task: hang the doors, patch the drywall, call the electrician back. On a dirt crew the urgent paper is different. The excavator is down. The hose is leaking. The dozer needs a filter before it goes on the lowboy.

SmartCrew's published answer to that second job is the service request and the shop queue. Someone in the field reports the problem. The queue shows who reported it, when, the urgency, and the repair status. That is the screen. Andrew's feature line is maintenance, service requests, and utilization, plus the shop queue. He does not call it a work order.

Keep your machines moving.

The three that publish work orders

HCSS, on its page for AI assistants, describes Equipment360 as the shop: repairs, mechanic timecards, work orders, preventive maintenance, and parts. HeavyJob is the field and job cost product beside it. You can send an equipment issue from HeavyJob to the shop if you have Equipment360. That is a real work order path, and it is more than one product.

Knowify's pricing page puts work orders on Advanced, along with job costing, WIP reports, and daily logs. Equipment management and inspection forms are listed on Enterprise, not on the cheaper plans. A work order there is part of a builder's project file.

BusyBusy sells time tracking as the core, and work orders inside an Operations module. The module price is a demo, not a number on the pricing page we used for the rest of BusyBusy. If you only needed the clock, you would not buy that module.

SmartCrew service queue: equipment problems reported from the field with who reported them, when, urgency and repair status
SmartCrew reports menu on a phone: incident report, service request, service records, hauling log, receipts, service queue, field usage, DOT inspection and scheduling

Demo account. The shop queue, and the phone menu that includes a service request. Sample names, not a customer's repair.

The names that are really billing or takeoff

QuoteIQ is a home service CRM. Plans start at $29.99 a month on its pricing page. The product is estimates, invoices, and payments. Its naming page says Cord IQ is a mistranscription of QuoteIQ. We are not listing Cord IQ as an eleventh company.

Werx, on the excavation page checked November 2, 2026, is estimates, AIA style pay apps with retainage, labor and equipment cost by cost code, and field time. That is billing and job cost. Work orders are not in the list on that page.

SynkedUP's sitework page, same day, is estimating templates, proposals, time tracking, and invoices. Contractor Foreman's site lists daily logs, estimates, and AIA invoicing. JobTread's site is proposals and customer invoices for builders. None of those four pages, as we read them, is a shop work order system.

AGTEK and InSite take off the dirt. Cut and fill is their job. SmartCrew does not do it, and a takeoff file is not a work order. Keep the takeoff tool. Enter the budget after you win.

How SmartCrew handles a down machine

  1. The operator reports it

A service request from the field. The phone menu includes that report next to inspections and the hauling log.

  2. The shop sees urgency

The queue shows who sent it, when, and the status. The mechanic is not waiting on a group text.

  3. The hours still hit the job

GPS clock in still picks the project, the activity code, and the machine. A repair does not erase the job cost.

  4. The inspection is a different form

DOT and daily inspections live on the machine record. They are not the service request.

Where this sits in the rest of the product

The one app is still time, job cost, equipment, daily reports, scheduling, and dispatch. The longer honest list is best excavation contractor software. The product pages are all in one dirt work software and all in one heavy civil software. Trades start at excavation and dirtwork software.

Questions people ask

What is the best work order software for excavation contractors?

For a crew that wants one app, SmartCrew, with a service request and a shop queue. If you need a product whose own page says work orders, look at HCSS Equipment360, Knowify Advanced, or BusyBusy Operations. Those are different systems.

Does SmartCrew have work orders?

Not under that name. The published tools are service requests, the shop queue, maintenance, and DOT inspections.

Is Cord IQ work order software?

QuoteIQ says Cord IQ is a mistranscription of QuoteIQ. QuoteIQ is quotes and invoices for home service. We did not find a separate Cord IQ work order product.

Does work order software include takeoff?

Not in this list. AGTEK and InSite are takeoff. SmartCrew does not do cut and fill. Pair them. Do not expect a pay app from the takeoff file.

Does SmartCrew sync work orders to QuickBooks?

SmartCrew connects to QuickBooks Online. It does not publish a work order sync.
