Construction management software · Projul vs SmartCrew

projul alternative

Projul is construction management software for more than 30 trades, from remodelers and home builders to roofers, HVAC, siding and solar. CRM, estimating, scheduling, invoicing and job costing, sold in four flat-rate plans. SmartCrew is built only for heavy civil and dirtwork companies with 5 to 100 employees: crew time, machines, inspections, haul tickets, daily reports and job profit. If your money moves with iron and trucks, that's what SmartCrew is for.

Projul does not offer: DOT & daily inspections, service requests from the field, digital hauling tickets, AI reader for tickets & receipts, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), toolbox talks & safety meetings. Projul doesn't list these either: company announcements.

No: they do not offer it. Their own website says so, or it isn’t in the full feature list they publish (linked). Add-on: a paid add-on, a separate product or a higher plan. Limited: they have something close but narrower. Not listed (n/l on small screens): we searched their site and help pages and couldn’t find it, but they don’t publish a full list we could check.

This chart is SmartCrew’s feature list, so it doesn’t show what other products do that SmartCrew doesn’t (like estimating, payroll or hardware time clocks). Each comparison covers that in “where they’re the better pick”. SmartCrew’s Fleet Management, Sales CRM, and Scheduling & Communications are Premium categories; feature availability varies by plan.

Where each mark comes from

The short version

  • SmartCrew is built only for dirtwork and heavy civil: the clock-in, the machine, the inspection, the load and the job's profit in one app.
  • Projul has four plans, from $199 a month billed annually for up to 3 users to $1,199 a month billed annually for unlimited users. No plan charges per user, but each one caps how many users you get.
  • Job costing and QuickBooks Online start on Core+ ($599 a month billed annually, up to 20 users). Daily logs and GPS with geofencing are Pro only.
  • Projul is the better pick for estimates, proposals, e-signatures, progress billing and a client portal.
  • We couldn't find DOT inspections, a shop queue, haul tickets or an AI ticket reader on Projul's own pages.
  • SmartCrew starts at $99/month. Contact us for team pricing.

Projul is better for other trades. SmartCrew is built for dirtwork.

Projul's industries page lists more than 30 trades: bathroom and kitchen remodelers, decks, drywall, flooring, gutters, HVAC, roofing, siding, solar, windows and doors, and more. Excavation and grading is one entry on that list. For those other trades, Projul is the better pick.

SmartCrew is built for one thing: heavy civil and dirtwork contractors with 5 to 100 employees. Excavation, grading, sitework, underground utilities, paving, road construction, demolition, septic, directional drilling and land clearing. That's all we do.

Where Projul falls short on a dirtwork job:

What Projul is, and who it's for

Projul says it works for contractors of all sizes, from 5-person crews to companies with 1,000+ employees. Its industry list runs from remodelers, roofers and painters to concrete, paving and an excavation and grading page.

The product follows a job from the lead to the last invoice. CRM and lead capture. Estimates and change orders. Drag-and-drop scheduling. Job costing, progress billing and a client portal. The features page is a long list, and Projul was built by a contractor.

It's built for a company that sells, builds and bills. Where it gets thin is the iron. Its own excavation page says the equipment hours are not a replacement for a dedicated fleet management system.

How much does Projul cost?

Projul publishes its prices. Here's what its pricing page listed on October 28, 2026.

No per-user fee is a real plus. The part to read twice is which plan holds the tools a dirt crew uses every day. Job costing starts on Core+. The daily log and the GPS clock-in start on Pro.

SmartCrew starts at $99/month, and it's built to be well below the cost of enterprise construction software. Contact us for team pricing.

The key difference: built for every trade vs built only for dirtwork

When we went looking for software for our own family business, nothing fit. We only run 20-30 guys and there was nothing specifically designed for our size of heavy civil business. Projul is good software built for a lot of trades. Here's where that shows up on a dirt job.

Machines and the shop

Projul lets you log equipment hours against each project and record which machine an operator is running. Your shop manager can pull a report of hours on each machine and flag units that are due for service. That's useful. But Projul says itself this is not a replacement for a dedicated fleet management system.

In SmartCrew every machine has a record: hours, mileage, last and next service, and its inspection log. When an operator reports a problem from the cab, it lands in the shop's service queue with how urgent it is. We couldn't find DOT inspections or a service queue on Projul's site. Its recurring tasks can remind you to inspect, but a task isn't a pre-trip.

Trucks and loads

Projul's estimates break hauling into its own category with truck count, round-trip distance and cost per load. That's for the bid. We didn't find haul tickets for the loads that actually ran. In SmartCrew the haul ticket is the record. Truck, project, import or export, material, yards and the pit it came from. Snap a photo of the paper ticket and the AI reader fills it in.

The daily record

Projul's daily logs are good. Weather and crew hours fill in for you, and there are entries for equipment, deliveries, delays and safety. They're on the Pro plan. In SmartCrew the daily report, the photos and the production log come with the app, and the office gets the daily report automatically.

Knowing your profit every day

Projul tracks estimated costs against actual costs on every project in real time, starting on Core+. SmartCrew does it from the field data: the operator picks the machine at clock-in, loads and receipts land on the job, and the job page shows budget against spent for labor, materials, equipment, other costs and change orders. On a dirt job the iron is a big piece of the cost, so it gets its own line right next to labor.

What the crew has to do

Projul's crew clocks in from the task card or the schedule, so hours land on the job and the piece of work. Geofenced time tracking flags clock-ins outside the fence, on Pro. Our crews aren't tech savvy. And they don't need to be. In SmartCrew one phone app does the clock-in with job, activity code and machine, then the inspection, the haul log, the receipts and the daily report.

SmartCrew equipment list: each machine's ID, year, make, model, category, hourly rate and hours
SmartCrew service queue: equipment problems reported from the field with who reported them, when, urgency and repair status

SmartCrew hauling log: each load ticket's time, truck, project, import or export, material, yards and pit or yard it came from

Projul vs the other construction management tools

Projul sits with JobTread, Contractor Foreman, Procore, HCSS HeavyJob and Raken. These are built to run whole projects, or whole companies across a lot of trades. Here's how each one lines up against SmartCrew's full feature list, marked from each company's own website.

Feature chartSmartCrew vs enterprise and construction management software

Built to run big projects or every kind of contractor. Lots of power, but more setup, more screens and a bigger bill than most 5 to 100 person dirtwork companies need.

Where each mark comes from

When Projul still makes sense

Projul makes sense when selling and billing the job is the hard part.

Pick SmartCrew if

  • You run excavators, dozers and dump trucks and want machine hours, DOT inspections and the shop queue in the same app as time.
  • You haul, and you want haul tickets entered from a photo of the paper ticket.
  • You already estimate somewhere else and want profit against that bid every day.
  • Your guys need one simple phone app for the clock-in, the inspection, the load and the daily report.
  • You have 5 to 100 employees, use QuickBooks Online, and want us to set it up and train your people.

Pick Projul if

  • You're a remodeler, roofer, home builder or other trade on Projul's list.
  • You live in estimates and proposals, with line items for cut, fill, hauling and compaction.

The best Projul alternatives in 2026

  1. SmartCrew, for dirtwork and heavy civil companies with 5 to 100 employees that want crews, machines, loads and job profit in one app. That's us, so weigh this pick with that in mind.
  2. JobTread, estimating and job costing for builders and remodelers, with one plan at $199 a month plus users. See JobTread vs SmartCrew.
  3. Contractor Foreman, a low-cost all-in-one for general, trade and service contractors, from $49 a month billed annually. See Contractor Foreman vs SmartCrew.
  4. Contractor+, a field service CRM with a free plan for small trade businesses. See Contractor+ vs SmartCrew.
  5. HCSS HeavyJob, for bigger heavy civil contractors that self-perform with their own crews and equipment, priced by quote. See HCSS HeavyJob vs SmartCrew.

Projul sells across many trades. For heavy civil, start with the hcss alternative and dirt work software with crm.

Switching from Projul

You don't have to move everything at once. You can keep Projul for estimates and invoices and run the field in SmartCrew, or move over completely. Either way, we do the heavy lifting.

  1. Decide what stays

If your customers already sign estimates and pay invoices in Projul, that can stay. Pick the field side to move first.

  2. We set up your jobs, cost codes and machines

Our team sets up your account, moves your information over and organizes your workflows around how your crews work.

  3. Your guys clock in on day one

They pick the job, the activity code and the machine. The office sees live crew locations right away.

  4. Add inspections, loads and job costing

DOT inspections, haul tickets, daily reports and job profit come next. We train your people as you go. Most companies are up and running within a few weeks.

Questions people ask

Is Projul good for excavation companies?

Projul has an excavation and grading page, line-item estimating for earthwork, equipment on the schedule board and 811 locates tracked as tasks. It says its equipment hours are not a replacement for a dedicated fleet management system, and we couldn't find DOT inspections, a shop queue or haul tickets on its site. If those matter, SmartCrew is built only for dirtwork and heavy civil.

How much does Projul cost?

On October 28, 2026, Projul listed four plans billed annually: Starter $199 a month (up to 3 users), Core $399 (up to 10), Core+ $599 (up to 20) and Pro $1,199 (unlimited users). Monthly billing costs more. Daily logs and GPS with geofencing are on Pro only.

Does Projul charge per user?

No. Projul charges one flat rate per plan. Each plan caps the number of users, though: 3 on Starter, 10 on Core, 20 on Core+ and unlimited on Pro.

Does Projul track heavy equipment?

Projul lets you log equipment hours against each project, put machines on the schedule board and pull a report of hours per machine. Its own page says this is not a replacement for a dedicated fleet management system. In SmartCrew every machine has a record with hours, service dates, inspections and a shop queue.

Does SmartCrew do estimating like Projul?

No. SmartCrew doesn't do estimating or takeoff. It tracks your bid budget against actual cost once the job is won, and it has a sales pipeline for leads and bids. If estimates are the center of your office, Projul is built for that.

How much does SmartCrew cost?

SmartCrew starts at $99/month, and it's built to be well below the cost of enterprise construction software. Contact us for team pricing.
