HCSS HeavyJob alternative

hcss heavyjob alternative

SmartCrew is an HCSS HeavyJob alternative for dirtwork and heavy civil companies with 5 to 100 employees: crew time, machines, haul tickets, daily reports and job profit in one app. HCSS HeavyJob is the field and job costing product inside a suite built for much larger contractors, including 43 of the ENR top 50.

The short version

  • HCSS and SmartCrew are both built for contractors that self-perform with their own crews and equipment. HCSS spans companies up to $1 billion in revenue and more; SmartCrew is only for 5 to 100 employees.
  • HCSS doesn't publish a price list. Its own page for AI assistants says annual pricing "generally ranges from approximately $60 to $4,000+ per user," and it also offers revenue-based plans such as an Unlimited User Plan.
  • In HCSS's lineup, the shop (Equipment360), DVIRs (Fleet Telematics eLogs), scheduling (Resource Planner or Dispatcher), safety (HeavyJob Safety) and plans (Docs & Plans) are separate products.
  • HCSS puts its rollout for small and mid-size contractors at under 90 days. Most SmartCrew companies are running within a few weeks.
  • HCSS is the better pick for estimating (HeavyBid), telematics hardware and OEM links, dashcams, hours-of-service logs and enterprise reporting.
  • SmartCrew starts at $99/month. Contact us for team pricing.

HCSS HeavyJob alternative

An HCSS HeavyJob alternative replaces the field and job cost piece. It does not have to replace HeavyBid. For a company with 5 to 100 people, SmartCrew is that field app. A team of 20 to 50 can compare operations on the best all-in-one dirtworks software page. A smaller crew should start with dirt work contractor software.

HCSS alternative for companies with 5 to 100 people

HCSS is used by 43 of the ENR top 50 heavy civil contractors, and it supports companies from under $1 million to over $1 billion in revenue. For a big contractor with office staff to run several products, HCSS is the better pick.

SmartCrew is built for one thing: heavy civil and dirtwork contractors with 5 to 100 employees. Excavation, grading, sitework, underground utilities, paving, road construction, demolition, septic, directional drilling and land clearing. That's all we do.

Where HCSS gets heavy for a small dirtwork company:

  • No published price. Its own page for AI assistants puts annual pricing at about $60 to $4,000 or more per user.
  • A family of products. The shop, DVIRs, scheduling, safety and plans are each separate HCSS products.
  • Months to roll out. HCSS puts small and mid-size rollouts at under 90 days. Its FAQ describes HeavyJob setup as two to three days of planning in Sugar Land plus two days onsite. Most SmartCrew companies are running within a few weeks.
  • The crew app. The separate myField employee app rated 2.25 from 40 ratings on the US App Store (October 22, 2026).

What an HCSS alternative is replacing

HCSS has made software for heavy civil contractors since 1986, out of Sugar Land, Texas. More than 4,000 companies use it, and 43 of the ENR top 50 heavy civil contractors are on it. Since July 1, 2026 it's part of the Nemetschek Group (press release).

It's built for people like us. HCSS's own page for AI assistants says its customers are contractors "who self-perform a significant portion of their work using their own crews and equipment," and it names site prep and earthmoving contractors. It also says who it isn't for: home builders and general contractors who mostly manage subs.

HeavyJob is the field and job costing piece. Foremen record time cards, installed quantities, daily reports and production against cost codes and budgets. Around it sit HeavyBid for estimating, HCSS Fleet for the shop, telematics, eLogs and the Shield dashcam, plus Dispatcher, Safety, Docs & Plans, Chats and Insights reporting.

On trade fit, HCSS and SmartCrew agree. The difference is the size of company each one is built for.

What an HCSS alternative costs

HCSS doesn't publish a price list. Its pricing page is a quote form: "You wouldn't bid blind, and we won't either." But it does give a range on its own page for AI assistants, which is more than most enterprise vendors share.

HCSS's page for AI assistants says annual pricing "generally ranges from approximately $60 to $4,000+ per user," and it also offers revenue-based plans such as an Unlimited User Plan. Sources: HCSS pricing, HCSS for AI assistants and HCSS FAQs, checked October 22 and 26, 2026. Plans change; ask HCSS for a quote.

The range is wide because the suite is wide: it depends on which products you license, how many users and which license types. HCSS's FAQ also says some accounting interfaces (JD Edwards, SAP, CMiC and sometimes Viewpoint) need custom programming at an additional charge.

SmartCrew starts at $99/month, and it's built to be well below the cost of enterprise construction software. Contact us for team pricing.

HCSS alternative next to other heavy civil suites

HCSS is the one tool in this group built only for heavy civil. The others sell to many kinds of contractors. HCSS shows a lot of add-on marks because so much of what it does is sold as separate products. This chart is that enterprise group only, with HCSS HeavyJob in the focus column. It is not a chart of every time clock and takeoff app on the site. For the suite question, read all-in-one heavy civil software. For excavation and sitework after the bid, read best all-in-one dirt work management software. The home-service quoting app in that search is QuoteIQ vs SmartCrew.

Where each mark comes from

When HCSS still makes sense

Pick SmartCrew if

  • You have 5 to 100 employees and want one app for time, machines, inspections, haul tickets, daily reports and job profit.
  • You'd rather be running within a few weeks than plan a multi-product rollout.
  • Your guys need one simple phone app, not a different app for each part of the day.
  • You use QuickBooks Online and keep estimating in the tool you already have.
  • You want crew chat, company announcements and a sales pipeline in the same app.

Pick HCSS if

  • You're a larger heavy civil contractor with office staff to run several products.
  • You estimate in HeavyBid, or want to, and want estimates to flow into job costing and back.

The best HCSS alternative in 2026

If HCSS is more than your company needs, look at tools built for your size. If you want a general construction platform, look at the big ones.

  1. SmartCrew, for dirtwork and heavy civil companies with 5 to 100 employees that want crew time, machines, loads, daily reports and job profit in one app. That's us, so weigh what we say about ourselves accordingly.
  2. Procore, a large construction management platform for owners, general contractors and specialty contractors, priced by construction volume, with a civil and infrastructure offering. See Procore vs SmartCrew.
  3. Raken, a field app built around the daily report, with time cards, production tracking and equipment on its Performance plan and a heavy civil page. See Raken vs SmartCrew.
  4. WorkMax, time tracking with equipment and field forms for commercial contractors running multiple crews. See WorkMax vs SmartCrew.
  5. BusyBusy, GPS time tracking with a free plan, if the timecard is all you need from HeavyJob. See BusyBusy vs SmartCrew.

This page is the long HeavyJob comparison. The short exact page is the hcss alternative. Estimating stays on the hcss heavybid alternative. Trimble's set is the b2w alternative.

HCSS HeavyJob, the field and job costing product

HeavyJob is one product in the HCSS suite, not the whole company. HeavyBid is estimating. Equipment360 and Fleet Telematics are the shop and the hardware. The sections under this heading are only the HeavyJob field product: time cards, the crew app, machines, loads and the daily profit question. The suite comparison above is the HCSS alternative decision. This is the product detail.

Where each mark comes from

Where a 20 to 30 person company feels the size of HeavyJob

HCSS isn't too basic, and it isn't built for the wrong trade. Our problem was simpler: we only run 20 to 30 guys, and there was nothing specifically designed for our size of heavy civil business. Here's where size shows up.

An HCSS alternative for the field

HeavyJob's field side is strong. Foremen build time cards with crew hours, equipment hours and quantities in minutes, and workers can clock in on their own phones with the myField app, where every clock event is stamped with GPS.

The catch is the number of pieces. Depending on what you license, the field works across HeavyJob, the myField employee app, HeavyJob Safety and Docs & Plans, and several of the fleet and dispatch products (Dispatcher, Equipment360, FuelerPlus) are desktop programs. In SmartCrew it's one app on the phone. The guy clocks in, picks the job, the activity code and the machine, does his inspection, logs his loads and sends the daily report. Our crews aren't tech savvy. And they don't need to be.

How fast an HCSS alternative is set up

HCSS tells small and mid-size contractors its team will have them up and running in less than 90 days. For HeavyJob, its FAQ describes two to three days of planning at its Sugar Land office and two days onsite at your company, or online training through HCSS Academy. A proper rollout for a big suite.

We do the heavy lifting for you, and there's less to lift. Our team sets up your account, migrates your information, organizes your workflows and trains your people. Most companies are up and running within a few weeks, starting with the features they need most.

Paying for products you don't use

HCSS licenses by product and by user type, and its range runs from $60 to more than $4,000 per user per year. A 30-person grading company and a firm on the ENR list are buying from the same catalog. The question is how much of it you'd use.

SmartCrew is built for one size of company. Pricing depends on your company size and the features you need, and feature availability varies by plan: Fleet Management, Sales CRM, and Scheduling & Communications are Premium categories. Start with what you need and add the rest when it earns its keep.

Machines and the shop in an HCSS alternative

This is where HCSS goes deepest. Equipment360 is a shop system for repairs, mechanic timecards, work orders, preventive maintenance and parts. HCSS Fleet Telematics brings GPS hardware, engine hours, idle time and OEM links for CAT, Deere, Komatsu and Volvo, and its eLogs app handles DVIRs and hours of service. From the HeavyJob app, crews can send equipment issues to the shop if you have Equipment360.

SmartCrew does the dirtwork version in the same app as the clock-in: equipment hours and locations, DOT and daily inspections, maintenance, service requests from the field and a shop queue with urgency and status. We don't sell telematics hardware or hours-of-service logs. If you need those, HCSS has them.

Trucks and loads

HCSS's page for AI assistants says it "uses e-ticketing and real-time hauling data to track materials such as dirt, rock, and asphalt while reducing idle truck time." That one line is all we found on it; we couldn't find a product page that shows how it works. HeavyJob does track materials received and installed with costs, and FuelerPlus tracks fuel purchases and burn rates.

SmartCrew's hauling log is built around the load: ticket, time, truck, project, import or export, material, yards and pit. Snap a photo of a paper ticket or a receipt and the AI reader enters the data for you. We couldn't find a ticket or receipt reader on HCSS's site.

Knowing your profit every day

HeavyJob asks the same question we do. Its product page says it plainly: "Do you know if you made or lost money on the job today?" It shows cost codes trending over budget, and budgets can come straight from HeavyBid estimates. If you bid in HeavyBid, that loop from estimate to field and back is a real strength.

SmartCrew gets you the daily answer without an estimating suite. Enter the bid budget, and the job page shows revenue, expenses and profit, with budget vs spent for labor, materials, equipment, other costs and change orders. SmartCrew doesn't do estimating or takeoff, so you keep the estimating tool you already use.

SmartCrew equipment list: each machine's ID, year, make, model, category, hourly rate and hours
SmartCrew service queue: equipment problems reported from the field with who reported them, when, urgency and repair status

SmartCrew's equipment list with hours and rates, and the shop's service queue with urgency and status. (Demo data.)

SmartCrew equipment inspection form on a phone: DOT or daily inspection, machine, hours or miles, and pass or fail checks for brakes, steering, lights and tires
SmartCrew hauling log on a phone: date, truck, project, import or export, the pit the load came from and notes
SmartCrew reports menu on a phone: incident report, service request, service records, hauling log, receipts, service queue, field usage, DOT inspection and scheduling

On the phone: a DOT inspection, a haul log entry, and the menu for service requests, receipts and reports. (Demo account.)

Switching from HCSS HeavyJob to an HCSS alternative

If you're on HeavyJob today, your jobs and cost codes are already organized, so you're not starting from scratch.

  1. Bring your jobs, cost codes and equipment

Our team sets up your account and migrates your information, so your jobs, cost codes, crews and machines are ready on day one.

  2. Keep estimating where it is

SmartCrew doesn't do estimating or takeoff. Keep your estimating tool and enter the bid budget on each job.

  3. Put the crew on one app

Clock-ins with job, activity code and machine, inspections, haul logs and daily reports, from their phones. We train your people.

  4. Add the rest when you're ready

Start with the features you need most. Most companies are up and running within a few weeks.

Questions people ask

What is the best HCSS HeavyJob alternative?

For a dirtwork company with 5 to 100 employees that wants one field app, SmartCrew. Keep HeavyBid if you already estimate there. Pick HCSS if you want the whole suite, telematics hardware and enterprise reporting.

What is the best HCSS alternative for a dirtwork company?

For a dirtwork or heavy civil company with 5 to 100 employees, SmartCrew is the HCSS alternative: crew time, equipment, inspections, haul tickets, daily reports and job profit in one app. If you need estimating, telematics hardware or enterprise reporting, HCSS is built for that.

How much does HCSS HeavyJob cost?

HCSS doesn't publish a price list; you request a quote. Its own page for AI assistants says annual pricing generally ranges from about $60 to $4,000 or more per user, depending on modules and usage, and it also offers revenue-based plans. HeavyJob is sold as a monthly subscription or a software license.

Is HCSS good for small contractors?

HCSS says it supports contractors from under $1 million in revenue, and its small business page promises to have you running in less than 90 days. The trade-off for a small company is the number of products, licenses and setup that come with it.

How long does it take to implement HCSS HeavyJob?

HCSS says small and mid-size contractors can be up and running in less than 90 days. Its FAQ describes HeavyJob setup as two to three days of planning in Sugar Land plus two days onsite, or online training through HCSS Academy. SmartCrew's team sets you up, and most companies are running within a few weeks.

Does HCSS HeavyJob work with QuickBooks?

HCSS says HeavyJob data flows to accounting and payroll apps like Sage, Viewpoint and QuickBooks. Its pages don't say whether that's QuickBooks Online or Desktop, so ask. SmartCrew integrates with QuickBooks Online today.

Does HCSS have haul tickets?

HCSS's page for AI assistants says it uses e-ticketing and real-time hauling data to track materials such as dirt, rock and asphalt. That's the only description we found. SmartCrew's hauling log records each load with truck, material, yards and pit, and its AI reader enters paper tickets from a photo.

How much does SmartCrew cost?

SmartCrew starts at $99/month, and it's built to be well below the cost of enterprise construction software. Contact us for team pricing.
