ClockShark vs SmartCrew (2026): Pricing, Features & Best Alternatives

ClockShark is a GPS time clock and scheduling app for construction and field service businesses, from roofing and electrical to cleaning and healthcare. SmartCrew is built only for heavy civil and dirtwork companies with 5 to 100 employees. It runs the whole dirtwork day in one app, from the clock-in and the machine to the haul ticket and the job's profit. If your iron and your loads still live on paper, that's the gap we built SmartCrew to fill.

ClockShark doesn't list: pick the machine at clock-in, equipment hours & locations, DOT & daily inspections, maintenance tracking, service requests from the field, utilization rates, shop queue, automatic daily reports for the office, digital hauling tickets, AI reader for tickets & receipts, deliveries & production tracking, follow-ups & reminders, company announcements, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), toolbox talks & safety meetings, file sharing & permissions.

No: they do not offer it. Their own website says so, or it isn’t in the full feature list they publish (linked). Add-on: a paid add-on, a separate product or a higher plan. Limited: they have something close but narrower. Not listed (n/l on small screens): we searched their site and help pages and couldn’t find it, but they don’t publish a full list we could check.

This chart is SmartCrew’s feature list, so it doesn’t show what other products do that SmartCrew doesn’t (like estimating, payroll or hardware time clocks). Each comparison covers that in “where they’re the better pick”. SmartCrew’s Fleet Management, Sales CRM, and Scheduling & Communications are Premium categories; feature availability varies by plan.

Where each mark comes from

The short version

  • ClockShark is built around the timecard and the schedule. SmartCrew covers the timecard plus the machine, the inspection, the load, the daily report and the job's profit.
  • On October 26, 2026, ClockShark's pricing page showed Standard at $42 a month plus $9.50 per user and Pro at $63 plus $11.50 per user. A three-year contract term applies to all plans.
  • ClockShark's job costing (bid vs actual, profit and margin) is Pro only, and non-labor costs are added by an admin.
  • ClockShark is the better pick for scheduling-heavy crews, mixed service and construction work, QuickBooks Desktop, or a shared kiosk clock with facial recognition.
  • SmartCrew starts at $99/month. Contact us for team pricing.
SmartCrew office dashboard: live labor, material and equipment cost, active projects, overtime hours, a map of crews on jobsites and a list of who is clocked in on which job and machine
SmartCrew phone app while clocked in: time on the clock, the project, the activity code and the machine being run, with Break, Log & Switch and Clock Out

ClockShark is better for other trades. SmartCrew is built for dirtwork.

ClockShark's own industries page lists cleaning services, electrical, painting, plumbing, roofing, solar, pool service and landscaping. It even lists healthcare providers, accountants and nonprofits. If that's your trade, ClockShark is the better pick.

SmartCrew is built for one thing: heavy civil and dirtwork contractors with 5 to 100 employees. Excavation, grading, sitework, underground utilities, paving, road construction, demolition, septic, directional drilling and land clearing. That's all we do.

Where ClockShark falls short on a dirtwork job:

  • Your machines aren't on its pages. We couldn't find equipment hours, maintenance, inspections or a shop queue on ClockShark's pricing page, product tour or job costing page. Equipment is a cost an admin types in.
  • Haul tickets aren't listed. On a dirtwork job, the load ticket is where a lot of the money hides.
  • Job costing is Pro only. Materials, equipment, rentals and subs are entered by an admin. On an excavation job, that's most of the cost.
  • Three years, per head. A three-year contract term applies to every plan, and every user costs $9.50 to $11.50 a month on top of a base fee. 40 guys on Pro is $18,828 over the term.

What ClockShark is, and who it's for

ClockShark is a GPS time tracking and crew scheduling app for construction and field service businesses. It started as a family-run trade business in Chico, California, and it's now part of the Simpro Group, next to Simpro, BigChange and AroFlo. Its sale to simPRO was announced by Vista Point Advisors.

ClockShark's own about page aims at teams of roughly 3 to 75 people. Its industries menu runs from construction and roofing to cleaning, painting and landscaping. The core is the same for all of them: GPS clock-in to a job and a task, a schedule on the crew's phones, approvals, and a sync to payroll.

In August 2026 it added ClockShark Lightning: an AI shift brief called JobReady, task checklists, and mileage tracking on Pro. It's built for a crew whose day is mostly people and places. For a crew whose day is machines and loads, most of the work happens outside it.

How much does ClockShark cost? (ClockShark pricing for 2026)

ClockShark charges a monthly base fee plus a fee for each user. Its pricing page fills in the numbers with a script, so we opened it in a real browser on October 26, 2026 and wrote down what it showed.

ClockShark list prices, US dollars per month
PlanBase feePer userWhat the plan adds
Standard$42$9.50Time and attendance, GPS, job and task tracking, geofencing, drag-and-drop scheduling, manager approvals, integrations, task checklists, JobReady
Pro$63$11.50Everything in Standard, plus paid time off, multi-office controls, advanced job costing, shift wrap-up and compliance forms, mileage tracking

As shown on ClockShark's pricing page in a browser on October 26, 2026. A three-year contract term applies to all plans. The page's code also carries an older set of prices ($40 + $9 and $60 + $11), so check the page when you buy. Plans and promotions change.

Three things in the fine print matter to a dirtwork owner. The three-year term covers every plan, after a 14-day trial with all Pro features. ClockShark bills only for active users, prorated by the day, which is fair to a seasonal crew. And its ADP connector costs a few dollars a month extra, while its fair-use policy lets it limit or charge for heavy use of AI, storage and notifications.

SmartCrew starts at $99/month, and it's built to be well below the cost of enterprise construction software. Contact us for team pricing.

The key difference: hours and schedules vs the whole dirtwork day

ClockShark tracks your people. SmartCrew tracks your people, your machines, your trucks and your money. We run 20 to 30 guys ourselves, and when we went looking there was nothing built for our size of heavy civil business. Time tracking apps were too basic. Enterprise software was too complicated, confusing, and expensive. Here's where that line falls next to ClockShark.

Machines and the shop

We couldn't find equipment hours, maintenance, inspections or service requests on ClockShark's pricing page, product tour or job costing page. Equipment shows up only as a cost an admin adds to a job separately.

In SmartCrew the operator picks the machine at clock-in, so the hours land on that machine's record. The DOT or daily inspection happens on the same phone. A problem in the field becomes a service request, and the shop sees it in the queue with its urgency and status.

Trucks and loads

A haul ticket is where a lot of dirtwork money hides. ClockShark's pages don't list haul or load tickets. SmartCrew's hauling log keeps each load's ticket, time, truck, project, import or export, material, yards and the pit it came from. Snap a photo of a paper ticket and the AI reader enters it for you.

Profit every day, not at the end of the job

ClockShark's job costing is real: bid vs actual cost, gross profit, margin, and an email when cost passes the bid. It's on Pro, it's set up and viewed in the web app, and materials, equipment, rentals and subs are entered by an admin. On an excavation job, that's most of the cost.

SmartCrew's job page shows revenue, expenses and profit, with budget against spent for labor, materials, equipment, other costs and change orders. Your crew logs the hours, machines, loads and receipts from the field, in the same app. You see a job going sideways while there's still time to fix it.

What your guys have to do

Our crews aren't tech savvy. And they don't need to be. ClockShark's crew side is simple: clock in to a job and task, check the schedule, answer clock-out questions on Pro. SmartCrew is just as few taps, but the same phone app also holds the machine, the inspection, the haul log, the receipts and the daily report. One app to learn, not three.

SmartCrew phone app while clocked in: time on the clock, the project, the activity code and the machine being run, with Break, Log & Switch and Clock Out
SmartCrew equipment inspection form on a phone: DOT or daily inspection, machine, hours or miles, and pass or fail checks for brakes, steering, lights and tires

In SmartCrew the operator is clocked in to the job, the activity and the machine, and does the DOT inspection on the same phone. (Demo account.)

SmartCrew hauling log: each load ticket's time, truck, project, import or export, material, yards and pit or yard it came from
SmartCrew service queue: equipment problems reported from the field with who reported them, when, urgency and repair status

The office side: every load's truck, material, yards and pit in the hauling log, and field problems waiting in the shop's service queue. (Demo data.)

ClockShark vs the other time tracking apps

ClockShark sits with BusyBusy, WorkMax, ExakTime and QuickBooks Time. All five are built around the timecard. ClockShark stands out for drag-and-drop scheduling on every plan, and for Conversations, message threads on each job and customer. The chart puts each one against SmartCrew's full feature list, marked from each company's own pages.

Feature chartSmartCrew vs time tracking apps

Built to track hours. Great at the timecard, but the rest of the business (machines, loads, job profit) lives somewhere else.

Where each mark comes from

When ClockShark still makes sense

ClockShark makes sense when your trade is on its list and your week is about people and schedules, not machines.

Pick SmartCrew if

  • You run excavators, dozers and dump trucks and want machine hours, DOT inspections and the shop queue next to the timecard.
  • Your loads matter, and you want haul tickets entered from a photo.
  • You want daily reports, job chat and safety (JSAs, toolbox talks, incident reports) in the same app.
  • You want job profit against the bid every day, with labor, materials and equipment in one place.
  • You have 5 to 100 employees and use QuickBooks Online.

Pick ClockShark if

  • You're an electrical, plumbing, roofing, painting, cleaning or service company.
  • Your week is mostly scheduling people across lots of job sites, and you want that on the cheapest plan.

The best ClockShark alternatives in 2026

Start with what's actually broken. If it's the three-year term or the price per user, another time tracking app may be enough. If it's the machines, the loads and the job's profit, you need something built for that.

  1. SmartCrew, for heavy civil and dirtwork companies with 5 to 100 employees that want the timecard, the iron, the loads and the job's profit together. That's us, so weigh this pick with that in mind.
  2. BusyBusy, a GPS time tracker with a free plan and paid add-on modules. See BusyBusy vs SmartCrew.
  3. ExakTime, now sold as Arcoro Time, for contractors who want rugged job site time clocks or payroll on the same bill. See ExakTime vs SmartCrew.
  4. WorkMax, time tracking plus forms, assets and insight modules, quoted per user. See WorkMax vs SmartCrew.
  5. QuickBooks Time, formerly TSheets, if your office lives in QuickBooks Online, which it requires. See QuickBooks Time vs SmartCrew.
  6. Raken, construction management software that started with daily reports. Its time clock is a paid add-on. See Raken vs SmartCrew.

A time clock is not the whole heavy civil stack. The suite pages are the hcss alternative and the b2w alternative. A 45 person company starts at heavy civil construction software.

Switching from ClockShark

Check your contract dates first. ClockShark's pricing page says a three-year term applies to all plans, so line the switch up with the end of yours. After that, we do the heavy lifting.

  1. Pick a start date

Line it up with your ClockShark term and the start of a pay period, so one week's payroll doesn't come from two systems.

  2. We set up your jobs, crews and machines

Our team sets up your account, moves your information over and organizes your workflows. Your jobs and task list come across.

  3. Clock in on day one

Your guys clock in on their phones, picking the job, the activity code and the machine. The office sees live crew locations right away.

  4. Add the iron and the loads

Inspections, the shop queue, haul tickets and daily reports come next, when you're ready. We train your people as you go. Most companies are up and running within a few weeks.

Questions people ask

Is there a ClockShark alternative built for excavation companies?

Yes! SmartCrew is built only for dirtwork and heavy civil companies with 5 to 100 employees. It covers the timecard plus equipment, DOT inspections, the shop queue, haul tickets, daily reports and job profit. ClockShark is a time and scheduling app for every trade, from roofing and electrical to cleaning.

How much does ClockShark cost per user?

On October 26, 2026, ClockShark's pricing page showed Standard at $42 a month plus $9.50 per user and Pro at $63 a month plus $11.50 per user, in US dollars. For 15 people that's about $184.50 a month on Standard. A three-year contract term applies to all plans.

Does ClockShark require a contract?

Yes. ClockShark's pricing page says a contract term of three years applies to all pricing plans. It offers a 14-day trial with all Pro features first, and it bills only for active users, prorated by the day.

Can ClockShark track equipment hours?

We couldn't find equipment hours, maintenance, inspections or a shop queue on ClockShark's own pages. Equipment shows up as a cost an admin adds to a job in Pro job costing. In SmartCrew the operator picks the machine at clock-in, and the machine's record keeps its hours, last and next service, and inspection log.

Does ClockShark clock workers in automatically with geofencing?

No. ClockShark's geofences remind workers to clock in when they arrive and clock out when they leave, and flag punches made outside the job site. The worker still taps to clock in.

Does ClockShark do job costing?

On the Pro plan, yes. Administrators see bid vs actual cost, gross profit and margin in the web app, and get an alert when cost passes the bid. Materials, equipment, rentals and subcontractor costs are added separately by an admin.

Does SmartCrew work with QuickBooks like ClockShark does?

SmartCrew integrates with QuickBooks Online today, and we're working on QuickBooks Desktop, Foundation, ADP and more. ClockShark lists two-way QuickBooks sync and says it works with both QuickBooks Online and Desktop, so if you're on Desktop today, that's a point for ClockShark.
