What safety app fits a dirt work or heavy civil crew?

A construction safety app for dirt work and heavy civil is where the JSA, the toolbox talk, and the incident report get filed from the field. SmartCrew keeps those three on the same phone as the clock-in, for companies with 5 to 100 employees.

The short version

  • The foreman files the paperwork from the phone. The office reads the list.
  • DOT and daily equipment inspections are a different screen, on the machine.
  • This is not a full safety department system. It does not file OSHA logs for you.
  • It sits in the same app as time, job cost, files, and crew chat.
  • Built for crews that self-perform. Not for a GC safety department running every sub.

What the safety app actually records

On a dirt job the safety paper is usually a form in the glove box. The JSA gets filled when someone remembers. The toolbox talk is a signature sheet that stays in the truck. The near miss gets told on the radio and never written down.

SmartCrew's safety records are the three Andrew lists: job safety analyses, toolbox talks and safety meetings, and incident reports. The phone incident form asks for the project, the date and time, the type, what happened, photos, and who reported it. The types on that form are injury, near miss, and damage.

How a near miss gets written down

The point is the same day, from the person who saw it, while the ditch is still open. A story on Friday is a different record.

  1. Open the incident report

The phone form is on the same app as the clock-in. The crew does not switch to a second safety login.

  2. Pick the project and the type

Injury, near miss, or damage. Add the date and time.

  3. Write what happened and add photos

The form has a place for the story and for photos. That is the record the office can read.

  4. File the JSA and the talk on their own

A JSA is the analysis before the work. A toolbox talk or safety meeting is the talk. They are not the same form as the incident.

DOT inspections are a different job

A pre-trip on the dump truck is equipment. Brakes, lights, tires, the hours or miles. That form lives on the machine, next to maintenance and the shop queue. Mixing it into the JSA list makes both records worse. The writeup is the pre-trip inspection app.

The office safety list is for JSAs, toolbox talks, and incidents. If a talk has a sign-in, the demo list shows how many people signed. Those counts are sample data. They are not a compliance score.

What to look for in a heavy civil safety app

Questions for any safety app
Ask thisWhy a dirt crew cares
Can the foreman file it from the phone on that job?A binder in the shop is where forms go to die
Are the JSA, the talk, and the incident separate? One notes field is not a safety program
Does the incident take photos?SmartCrew's incident report does
Does it include the truck inspection?Ask. In SmartCrew the DOT inspection is the equipment module
Will it file your OSHA 300?SmartCrew does not claim that. If you need a full EHS suite, say so on the call

Who the safety app fits

Pick SmartCrew if

  • Your JSAs and toolbox talks are paper, and the near miss never gets written down.
  • You run dirtwork or heavy civil with your own crews, about 5 to 100 people.
  • You want safety forms in the same phone app as the clock-in.
  • You already know this is not a replacement for your safety officer or your OSHA filing.

Pick something else if

  • You need a corporate EHS system, training matrix, and OSHA recordkeeping as the product.
  • You are a GC collecting forms from subs you do not employ.
  • The only gap is the DOT pre-trip. Start with the equipment inspection, which SmartCrew also has.

Safety sits with the rest of the day

The same app still does GPS time tracking, job costing, equipment, daily reports, and haul tickets. The plan set is file storage. The note that tells the crew about a lane closure is crew communication. The next bid is the construction CRM, and that one is Premium.

Who is SmartCrew for, by crew size?

Dirtwork and heavy civil companies with about 5 to 100 employees. That's who we build for: small to midsized contractors. Small, for us, means a real crew. Not a one-man shop.

Is SmartCrew a fit for your crew size?
Your companySmartCrew?Why
1 to 4 peopleProbably not yetIf it's you and a helper, a quoting and invoicing app may be all you need. We built SmartCrew for companies with crews to manage.
5 to 20 peopleYesThe owner still runs a machine some days. The office is one or two people. You don't need more software. You need fewer places to look.
20 to 50 peopleYesA few crews, a shop and trucks on different jobs. Our own family company runs 20 to 30 guys. This is the size we built it for.
50 to 100 peopleYesMore crews, more iron, more tickets. Same simple app for the field. You see every job against the bid.
Over 100 peopleProbably notBigger companies often want enterprise software with a full-time admin. That's not us. See HCSS HeavyJob vs SmartCrew.

Questions people ask

What safety app fits a dirt work crew?

One the foreman will fill out on the phone, on that job. SmartCrew records JSAs, toolbox talks and safety meetings, and incident reports for injury, near miss, or damage, with photos. It is in the same app as the clock-in.

Is a dirtwork safety app the same as a dirt work safety platform?

Yes for this product. Dirtwork and dirt work are two spellings of the same crews. Software, app, and platform here mean SmartCrew, not a separate safety vendor. Heavy civil crews use the same forms.

Does all-in-one heavy civil software include safety?

Yes. All-in-one and all in one are the same wording. Safety forms sit with time, machines, and job cost. The module list is on all in one heavy civil software. Safety is not one of the Premium category names.

Does the safety app include DOT inspections?

DOT and daily equipment inspections are on the machine, in the equipment module. The writeup is the pre-trip inspection app. The safety module is the JSA, the toolbox talk, and the incident report.

Will SmartCrew file my OSHA logs?

No. That is not a feature we claim. The app stores the field safety records listed above. Your OSHA filing, if you have one, stays with the person who already does it.

How much does a construction safety app cost?

SmartCrew starts at $99/month. Contact us for team pricing. It is built to sit well below enterprise construction software.

Who is this safety app not for?

A GC safety department collecting every sub's paperwork, and a company that wants a full EHS suite. It is for dirtwork and heavy civil contractors with about 5 to 100 employees who want the forms on the crew's phone.
